Celebration of the Land and a Romantic Harvest:Chant of Intangible Heritage presented by the 2019 Asia-Pacific Traditional Arts Festival

The 2019 Asia-Pacific Traditional Arts Festival, themed as “Celebrating for the Land: Dialogue between Countryside Festivals and Intangible Cultural Heritage,” invites 4 overseas performance groups that are on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and four prestigious craftsmen to present their talent and discover Taiwan’s intangible cultural heritage in what will be a joint display of stunning cultural treasures.

Four overseas performance groups who transmit the beauty of intangible cultural heritage using vocal and instrumental skills have been invited. Mystic Pathways from Rajasthan, India will present
Kalbelia folk singing and dancing. Some of their songs incorporate traditional Bulgarian chanting, a feature that the group has acquired as their Bulgarian counterparts have sought out their Gypsy roots. IBERI, from Georgia, will showcase Georgian polyphonic singing using traditional instruments. Additionally, IBERI will perform several pieces with Sound to Heaven - Lileh of Bunun Tribe, which is recognized as a Conservation Group for Music of the Bunun by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, giving the audience the opportunity to experience the harmonious combination of two distinct forms of vocal art.

USUYEONG GANGGANSULLAE, from the South Korean province of Jeollanam-do, is going to perform the traditional Ganggangsullae dance, which is an exclusively feminine art performed on Mid-Autumn Festival. The world’s only official quan họ group, National QuanHọBắcNinh Folk Songs, will share popular quan họ singing from northern Vietnamese villages. The quan họ performers will also team up with the Manjhou Folk Songs Association (named a
Conservation Group for Manjhou Folk Songs by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture) in singing together for the audience’s delight.

To enhance this meaningful and impressive experience for attendees, craftsmen from four countries have been invited to show their unique art forms:
Buddhist deity statuary from Nepal, cloisonné enamel work from Georgia, raden lacquer work from Korea, and rattan weaving from Vietnam. The craftsmen will exhibit their skills, exchange ideas with local artists, and hold DIY workshops for attendees. Specifically, the artists in residence at the Yilan Park of the National Center for Traditional Arts are scheduled to participate in an art exchange with these visiting craftsmen, which is sure to be a highlight of the festival.

Located on the Lanyang Plain, which is radiant during each season, Yilan Park is a wonderful spot that symbolizes the eternal beauty of traditional Taiwanese arts. We warmly invite you to this earth-infused celebration!
