About the Performance
"Zheng ZhiLong, The Pirate King of Formosa" is the flagship production of the 2020-21 Taiwan Traditional Theatre Festival. The collaboration of the century-old Ming Hwa Yuan Arts & Cultural Group with Huang Zhi-kai and Wang Chung-lin of Story Works will bring Taiwanese opera to new horizons.
The story of "Zheng ZhiLong, The Pirate King of Formosa" took place in the Age of Discovery, when many warriors went to Taiwan, throwing the Asian-Pacific region into turbulence and chaos. As one of these pioneering immigrants, Zheng ZhiLong landed his troupe at Wankan (in today's Jiayi), taking it as a base to dominate the South Sea and East Sea. After the Battle of Penghu, Battle of Liaoluo Bay, and other countless fights on the sea, Zheng finally established a powerful hegemony in the region. In the chaos, there were no rules or laws, and its strategic geographical position made the island of Taiwan a hotly contested spot. Warriors had to find their way through the bloody war.
This grand production stars Sun Tsui-feng, one of the most famous sheng performers in Taiwan, to interpret the magnificent life of Zheng ZhiLong. Also featured are the popular clown performer Chen Sheng-zai and several new-generation performers, including Chen Zhao-ting, Chen Zi-hao, Li Yu-zhen, and other Ming Hwa Yuan members. The audience will be stunned by this raging battle epic on the sea.
