 About the Performance

"A Reunion of Spears" is a traditional Bangzi piece based on "The Romance of Spears" and "Fighting with Spears", also known as the "Reunion of Father and Son" and "Luo Song Looking for His Father". The story concerns General Cheng Yaojin starting a revolution at Wakang Fort in the last years of the Sui dynasty. While the audience is expecting a tale of tragic wars and brave deeds, the play surprises them with "family dilemmas" – something often overlooked in martial plays. General Luo Cheng's father Luo Yi, who has beenaway from home for forty years, left behind his wife Jiang Guizhi who bitterly waits for him to return. When they finally reunite, Jiang is burning with anger because Luo refuses to acknowledge their relationship. After an angry yet funny fight, the story ends with a happy family reunion.

This classic piece features laodan (old female roles), which is not common intraditional Chinese opera .Two highlights include the unique sustained notes of qingyi-laodan (a special role in Bangzi opera featuring both qingyi and laodan) and the beautiful martial dances of laosheng and laodan. Three long passages sung by Jiang Guizhi are interwoven throughout the entire play, furnishing the audience with the information of how she meets her husband, advises him, hopes for him to come home, and curses him. The transition between the plaintive tones of the young qingyi to the mature notes of laodan vividly express the emotional journey of the heroine as she ages.

In this challenging piece, the plot moves at a fast pace with abundant singing, body movements, and martial dance focusing on the waist and legs. Thdemanding undertaking is usually designed for wusheng or wudan. As this play features laosheng and laodan, the performers must never forget the emotional aspects of the characters while displaying their agile martial skills. The "fighting" between the old couple is in fact a heart-to-heart conversationthat simultaneously entertains the audience with its emotionally rich singing and physical interactions.
