About the Performance
Meng Liang and the Treasure Horses is a play set in the borderlands of the Song Empire. Empress Dowager Hsiao of Liao has dispatched troops to invade a strategic position in the Song's northern frontier. Yang Yanzhao resists the Liao invasion, but is trapped in Tanzhou. Yan's trusted lieutenant Meng Liang hurries to Mt. Wutai to plead for Yang Wulan's assistance – help that he will only give if he can ride the treasured horses of the Eight Sage Kings. But when the Sage Kings are unwilling to lend their beloved steed, Meng Liang must figure out how to steal two prized horses – "Thousand-Li Wind" and "Ten-Thousand-Li Cloud" – in order to succeed in saving Yang Yanzhao.
The Performing Group│Sheng Ping Puppet Troupe
The Sheng Ping Puppet Troupe was officially founded in 1967 by Lin Tseng-nan, whose apprenticeship was grounded in the Wu Chou Yuan style created by the puppetry master Huang Hai-tai. The Chinese version of the troupe's name has the symbolic meaning of "peace shared around the world, Wu Chou known by all." The troupe is on a mission to balance tradition, innovation, and diversity in this art form. It endeavors to promote glove puppetry and pass down the culture and techniques of puppetry. At the same time, it also rolls out creative productions and workshop events to popularize and teach folk theater, bring puppetry culture to higher levels, and keep the art alive.
