A brief history
Due to the rapid changes of our current society, traditional arts are dying out because there are no people learning these skills. Therefore in February 1995, under a decision made by the Executive Yuan, a proposal for the establishment of a ‘North Eastern Cultural Arts Park’ was changed to a plan for establishing a ‘Center for Traditional Arts’ and the Council for Cultural Affairs, Taiwan was put in charge of this plan. In 1996 a preparatory office was founded, and on March 27, the preparatory office started official operation. Up until today, apart from dedicating ourselves to the new development of the center, we are still facing the problem of the traditional arts dying out and being lost. Therefore, we hope to finish our objectives in advance and finish surveys into traditional arts, the collection and organization of information on traditional arts so as to preserve them. We also hope to transmit these traditional arts in the shortest amount of time.On January16, 2002, we passed a primary examination by the Executive Yuan. On January 28 in the same year, we started to work on the park and

General Information

1. Organizational Aims:
According to the scheduled plans approved by the Executive Yuan, the aim of this center is to make sure that traditional arts can be passed on to future generations. In addition, in order to extend the influence of our traditions and to encourage more participation by people in the local residential area, we have now clearly defined this cultural park as a governmental organization that is managed by a private company under the supervision of the government.

2. Our Vision of Space Planning:
Our center is situated at the downstream of the Dong Shan River in Wujie township. Dong Shan Water Park is only across the river from us and our park can be easily reached by the coastal highway. The total space of the park covers some 24 hectares and was built to meet the needs of traditional theater, music, dance, arts, and acrobatics. The park has 21 buildings and sites in total. An explanation of various spaces and infrastructure at the park is provided below:
1. Entrance and Parking Area:
This area includes the main avenue, central controls, entrance to the traditional theatre performance area, promotion and development zones for traditional arts as well as parking areas for scooters, parking areas for small cars (including two pedestrian paths to the entrance of the drama and art zones), parking areas for large cars and roads linking the park to roads outside the park.
2. Administration and Accommodation Sites
This area includes administration offices, halls of residence for students and tutors, a communal area and a canteen.
3. Study Area for Traditional Arts
This area consists of the Modern Theater, the Traditional Music Hall, the Graduate School of Traditional Arts and the Library. There are also study and rehearsal spaces in the theater. The music hall has spaces for research and teaching and there is also a space for rehearsals in the stadium.
4. Traditional Theatre Performance Areas
This area includes the Modern Theatre, the Traditional Music Hall, the Exhibition Center and an outdoor theater and plaza.
5. Promotion and Development Zones for Traditional Arts
This includes areas such as the Exhibition Center, the Guang-Hsiao Hall, the Artists’ Studios, the Traditional Toy Center, the Wen-Chang Hall, the Traditional Theatre, food stands, the House of Huang and the Informational center.
