well as the first museum in
Ilan. A decade in planning,
the Taiwan Theater Museum,
though small in scale, is now
a full-fledged museum

halls, a video room, an
audiovisual library, a research room and an

exhibitions, shows, seminars and studies, displaying collections and carrying
out independent publishing. The Museum has a rich collection of Taiwanese folk

The Dongshan River Water Park is based on
the themes of ‘Water’ and ‘Greenery’ and was built around the natural features
of the Dongshan River. It is an open space surrounded by water and greenery and
is suitable for a wide range of activities including tourism, recreation,
relaxation, and education.

 Third
stop: Tofu Cape (Su-Ao)
|
| |
 |
The panoramic Tofu Cape is a natural
ocean park, highly suitable for wading, snorkeling, picnicking and swimming.
There are no Tofu rocks in this area, nor is the town famous for the food tofu
.Why then is this place called Tofu Cape? A photo, taken 35 years ago, reveals
the secret. In the later years of the Japanese Colonial Period, construction of
the
|
| |
Nanfang Ao Channel had just commenced. When the war started,
construction was abandoned, so after the Republic Government took over, two
blocks of gate bases that looked like two giant pieces of tofu were left
standing by the port. This is how the name of this area came about. The two
blocks of the water gates were meant to control the access of fishing boats.
The Ilan County Government turned the beach between the two giant rocks into a
natural beach park and built the place into a seashore Coliseum with long sheds
and stone steps. The beach at Tofu Cape is safe with small waves. It is also a
favorite summer spot for barbeques and family outings.
Recently however, researchers conducted a survey on the coral reefs in this
area. Researchers found that the coral reefs located at three to ten meters
under the water are dying or have become bleached. Only 5% of the coral (and
10% to 20% last year) that is located 10 meters underwater and 25% of the coral
(35% last year) located at 5 meters under the water and below is surviving.
Visitors to this area should treasure these coral reefs. Please give the coral
reefs some air to breath by not littering the sea.
