2.Sports, Recreation and Cuisine in Ilan (Ilan to Taipei)

Tofu Cape (Su-ao) → Wulaikeng Scenic Area → Luodong Sports Park → Luodong Forest → Luodong Night Market
pic First stop: Tofu Cape Su-ao
The panoramic Tofu Cape is a natural ocean park, highly suitable for wading, snorkeling, picnicking and swimming. There
are no Tofu rocks in this area,
nor is the town famous for
the food tofu .Why then is
this place called Tofu Cape?
A photo, taken 35 years ago,
reveals the secret. In the later
years of the Japanese Colonial
Period, construction of the Nanfang
Ao Channel had just commenced.
When the war started, construction was abandoned, so after the Republic Government

took over, two blocks of gate bases that looked like two giant pieces of tofu were left standing by the port. This is how the name of this area came about. The two blocks of the water gates were meant to control the access of fishing boats. The Ilan County Government turned the beach between the two giant rocks into a natural beach park and built the place into a seashore Coliseum with long sheds and stone steps. The beach at Tofu Cape is safe with small waves. It is also a favorite summer spot for barbeques and family outings.

Recently however, researchers conducted a survey on the coral reefs in this area. Researchers found that the coral reefs located at three to ten meters under the water are dying or have become bleached. Only 5% of the coral (and 10% to 20% last year) that is located 10 meters underwater and 25% of the coral (35% last year) located at 5 meters under the water and below is surviving. Visitors to this area should treasure these coral reefs. Please give the coral reefs some air to breath by not littering the sea.

  Luodong Sports Park
Spread across 47 hectares of lands, Luodong Sports Park was opened in March 1996. Luodong Sports Park is a recreational facility based on the concepts of nature, comfort and recreation. In addition to being an all-in-one facility for Luodong residents, this park is also an area modeled on the cityscape of the future. Therefore, this park, with a theme based on the local style of the Lanyang Plain, was completed

with an elaborate landscape, water sports facilities and abundant flora.

This park is mainly a sports park; however in order to ensure the balanced development of recreation and health, this sports facility was designed for fitness and relaxation. The park’s open and friendly design encourages residents to come and use the equipment. It has a wide ange of multi-purpose fields for rugby (football), track sports, baseball, ice-skating, basketball, croquet, swimming, tennis, and lawn bowling.

pic Fourth stop: Luodong Forest
  Luodong Forest
Logging in Taiwan started with the Taiwan Governor’s Office in the Japanese Colonial Period. At this time, logs were transported along streams. In 1924, the first steam train and forest railway from Tuchang to Luodong were completed. These factors spurred the development of Luodong and turned Luodong into an important commercial center.

In 1945, the Luodong Office of Forest Administration was established to take over the business of the former Governor’s Office. In 1982, Taiping Shan Forest was closed and the operations of the administration office went from logging to restoration and recreation.

Logging Process: Logs harvested in Taiping Shan were rolled off the hills along the slope to rail tracks and then transported to the railways. The trains carried the logs to the Luodong Log Yard where they were soaked in wood ponds. With the increased levels of environmental protection awareness of recent years, these forests have been turned into recreational parks and tourism has brought yet another kind of prosperity to this small logging town.
